Silica refractories are primarily composed of silicon dioxide and are noted for their high melting point and resistance to acidic slags. These are widely used in the glass industry and coke oven construction. However, their poor thermal shock resistance limits their use in applications involving frequent temperature fluctuations. Basic refractories, particularly magnesite-based products, are essential in steelmaking due to their ability to resist basic slags. Magnesia-chrome and dolomite refractories are often used in electric arc furnaces and converters, where chemical resistance and structural integrity are crucial.
